Everyone is guilty of it, everyone has done it, and there is nothing to be embarrassed about, its human nature……..its…..”The SELFIE!!”
It’s the latest THING to do, your at the beach, at a party, with your mates, or even in hospital giving birth, there is always the right time for a “selfie”, am I right??
There are so many selfie pictures on social media and magazines of beautiful people in their natural habitat looking amazing. It shits me really.
These stunners are always at the ready for a quick pic, and 10 times out of 10 they look bloody fabulous! I always like to ask myself how many pictures did it actually take do get looking that good? 2? 20? expert level 1?
Surely I’m not the only one who wakes up, puts on killer makeup looks in 3 different mirrors and thinks:
“Shit….I look the goods today!” or ” Geez, I’m all that and a bag of potato crisps” (brittish accent required). “I think I might just take a selfie!” so you go yet your trusty phone, click the camera icon, only to reveal an extremely unflattering upper shot of your nostril, position the phone always slightly raised so no one can see your double chin, pull a few faces and try some different angles, and the CLICK. All to reveal this…….
So verrrry attractive!!
But believe me when I tell you, a good pose at just .. the .. right .. angle can be the difference between a good pic and a OMG do I really look like that, I’m going to go rock in the corner quietly pic.
There is a great article I found by Fashion Gone Rogue, about how to take a great selfie! you can findit here :
Not all of us are blessed with the photogenic gene, and thats’s ok! Because at the end of the day, there is always filters to help those of us that have not been shined upon by the photo gods.
It only takes 5 minutes, a really good editing app, 50% black and white saturation with a slightly blue hue and a 60% increase in the blur filter to get things looking decent!! May the photo gods be forever in your favour!
Leave a comment down below if you can relate!! PMSL xxx
what the hell is ppd you ask?? and what does it have to do with hair colouring??? um…..a lot!!! here is the lowdown…….
PPD, also known as “Paraphenylenediamine” is a nasty ass chemical used in Hair Dye! It is known to cause horrific allergies and has even caused death! Holy Shit you say? Yep, its that bad! Let me explain:
PPD is an ammonia derived chemical. It is found not only in hair dyes, but may other things also, including: Fur dyes, dark coloured cosmetics ( I know! booooo ), temporary tattoos like henna, inks, black rubber, greases and a heap more!
What does PPD do you ask?? Ill explain it to you in a non scientific, I went to the best college sort of way…PPD basically helps the hair colour pigment stick to the hair shaft. That is, without all the crappy terms, what it does! It is most commonly found in very dark hair dyes, like blacks and dark browns. It rears it’s ugly chemical head in not only permanent hair colours, but also in semi colours as well.
PPD is a known carcinogenic! It has also been known to cause cancer and other nasty stuff, and sensitises people who use it often, I know this because after being a hairdresser for 17 years, I AM EXTREMELY ALLERGIC!!!!
I have been exposed to this chemical for so long, that if PPD containing hair dye, comes ANYWHERE near my head, I blow up like a pufferfish needing a good fart!!
I blister, I ooze and I am in a hell of a lot of pain! It is not a pretty sight I tell you! PPD allergies can come on ant ANY time! It could be you 45th time of colouring your hair with the same brand, and WHAMMO! The scary thing is, not all allergies (like mine) happen straight away! My allergy experience, for example takes at least 24 hrs to show up, and boy is it a shit show when it does!! This is why I stress the importance of a patch test!!!! It takes 2 mins max to mix up a little bit of your colour and place it behind your ear or on the inner part of your arm!! JUST DO IT!! Believe me, you don’t want the alternative!
PPD is a cheeky shit, It goes under many different names on your hair colour ingredients list :
Signs and symptoms of a PPD allergy can be from mild to life threatening, these include:
Itchy or raised skin, red rash, swollen lips and eyes, swelling in or around the mouth, breathing difficulty, wheezing, nausea and vomiting, blisters and oozing, anaphylaxis, burning sensation.
If you ever have ANY of these symptoms, seek medical advise quick smart!!
SOOOOOO, What do I do know that I’m scared as hell to colour my hair???
By no means am I telling you not to colour your hair!! Everyone wants to have gorgeous, shiny, I want that colour now, in trend hair colour! I’m a hairdresser after all! I’m just giving you guys the heads up, just informing you and telling you to be aware! Patch test for god sake, I don’t want anyone to have a fab hair colour, but have you, look like you climbed out of the sewer, or live in a boiler room with puss and swelling and a face only a mother could love….jokes.
For people like myself with allergies, or people that are a little more conscious of the health and chemical side of things there is another way! DIRECT HAIR DYE! or semi-permanent hair colour!! These type of colours, are what they say….semi permanent. They do not oxidise…..(basically, they don’t need to be mixed, and don’t use a chemical reaction to process ), they are applied directly to your hair and sit on the outside of your hair shaft. Many of these colours DO NOT contain PPD and are actually quite conditioning for your hair. I have tried and tested so many its not funny!
Some of the brands I love the most include: Pulp Riot, Manic Panic, Adore, Unicorn hair by Lime Crime, Directions, Stargazer and Elumen by Goldwell. I have black hair….( I know, best colour choice for a hair colour allergy… Not! ), but these hair colours I have mentioned have been my go to brands that I have used on myself for ages, with no reaction whatsoever! My most recent hair colour experience was from the brand PULPRIOT. I used there Noir Hair colour in deep black am I was extremely impressed I must say! Get on it! http://www.pulpriothair.com
There IS a downside to using Semi’s or direct Dyes though, they do not have the same staying power as a permanent or demi permanent hair dye. Direct dyes usually last anywhere from 3 – 25 washes depending on how light or dark your hair is to start with. Direct hair dye companies, usually recommend to prelighten your hair first for the best results, this ensures, the colour is at its most vibrant and it lasts longer! These are a great way to add colour, shine and condition to your hair, and are a safe way to experiment with your hair colour without any long time commitment
( especially if you are colouring for the first time! or want a drastic change, and not too sure if you will like it, or will look like a mixed bag of lollies with bright pink hair! )
So there is my advice! Colour your hair, but be SAFE and AWARE and do a patch test first!!! And learn from my experience, a hair dye allergy is NOT fun, especially when you looked like me, ( insert pufferfish needing a good fart here ). xxxxx
My Favourite Direct Hair Dye, websites: https://www.pulpriothair.com https://www.manicpanic.com https://www.limecrime.com
As a lover of all things beauty, I find myself consistently experimenting. Experimenting with my makeup, on my hair, trying out the latest eyeshadow palette or the latest hair extensions. One way or another, I am always trying something new. I have always done it, it’s just who I am.
I can guarantee you, at least 5 times out of 10, it turns out shit! Believe me! I tried the whole” Instagram eyebrow” trend, how you make your eyebrows quite bold and boxy and gradient, looks fantastic on a twenty odd year old, but on me? Nope…….Just….NOPE!! I looked like a slug wiped its arse on my face!
We are so conditioned to “Look” a certain way, our expectations of ourselves are so unrealistic, are we are our own biggest critics. I would love a dollar for every time I looked in the mirror and thought ” What the….. holy %$#@ ?, poke it….poke it with a stick!! “, “When did my chin multiply??” , ” Shit, people would pay good money for the bags under my eyes! “. This is where the “Donut” Theory comes in………..
1. DONUT……… Let anyone tell you who you should be, or what you should look like. Honey your fab, and you do you
2. DONUT……… Let people make you feel insecure, they are usually the ones with the insecurities! trust me!!
3. DONUT……… Ever think that your cellulite and stretch marks are unsightly, every mark on your body has a story to tell, wear them with pride!
4. donut……… let the shitty attitude of others, rub off on you stay true to yourself!
5. donut……… Change for anyone!…….ever!!!
There you have it….my “Donut” theory. Little words of wisdom, life lessons and acquired knowledge from me to you…….And if all the above fails……drive to Donut King, buy yourself a donut boat (the mini ones with the cinnamon AND icing) and go to town!!
Let me know if you agree or if you have anything to add to my theory!! Comment Down Below xxxxx
One of the most talked brands in the world of makeup, and I finally got it in my hot little hands…..all the way from America let me introduce you all to ……. “colourpop!!”
If you have ever been on Instagram, or on a YouTube makeup tutorial video, I’m sure you have heard of the brand Colourpop! An American based company that makes a uniquey crafted eyeshadow like none other that I have ever tried!!……..like…..EVER.
I first seen Colourpop on YouTube. A well known beauty guru was doing one of those unboxing videos that I just LOOOOOVE watching! As I sat there, glued to the video, she was pulling out of the box, these little pots of colour. I watched intently. One by one, these eyeshadow pots were untwisted and swatched on her wrist, and at that very moment, I knew I had to get them!! TAKE MY MONEY!!
After putting the kids to bed, I snuggled up in my bed, pulled out my trusty mobile and went to town on the Colourpop website. I swear it took me about an hour and a half to pick the colours I wanted…..I wanted them all! I stuck to the “Super Shock” shadows, because they looked the most glittery and intense. If I was going to go for something “colourful” to add to my makeup collection, I wasn’t going to half-arse it! The Super Shock eyeshadow colours looked extremely vibrant and bold….and boy was I right!!!
So the wait began. Days went by, my front window had an almost permanent drool mark from the hours I spent waiting for the mailman to deliver my package. And 10 days later, it arrived!
I have to laugh, whenever I get a package in the mail that I am super excited about, I have to get everything in the house done first, dishes, vacuuming, hanging out all the washing etc, it’s almost like a reward for me…. after I get all the shit stuff done first!
So there I am, just me, my cup of tea, and a box of Colourpop goodies! The packaging is super cute and I even got a little personalised card inside, nice touch Colourpop!! I began my unboxing, I swatched, I swirled, and I played. It was like Christmas.
I have gotta say, the texture of these eyeshadows are quite different, they are bouncy almost!, like mousse or soft icing. Bizarre but really cool. The colour pay off is incredible with a swatch on the arm, intense and everything I hoped it would be! I was soooo impressed! But the real test was yet to come…how will it wear???
I wasn’t sure what the best way was to apply the eyeshadow was, and I heard that the eyeshadows are a lot more pigmented when applied by your finger to the eyelid….and I would have to agree. I went straight in with one of the brightest colours I got, called COCONUT. Its an intense cobolt/peacocky blue that is to die for! Go bold or go home right?? I was a little disappointed with the application using just a brush, I must say. Using your finger is, by far, the best way to go with these shadows. So I improvised. I laid down the colour with my fingers first, and then, with a blending brush, buffed the colour into my lids to blend it out…TADAAAAA worked like a charm! So my recommendation is this method! With the lighter, more shimmery shades it doesn’t matter as much, but if your going for a Colour POP….( see what I did there! lol ) blend, blend, blend!!! They wore incredibly well all day….roughly 12 hours, and where even a little difficult to get rid of, you have to really scrub some of the colours off, they stayed that well!
I did a heap of swatches on my arm, but found it very hard to get a really good angle for all the colours to show in all their glory, so I swatched on stark white paper in hopes to get a better view of the colour shifts and the true tones of the colours I bought. They are so damn colourful its truly very hard to get an accurate pic, but here they are:
I am truly in love with Colourpop eyeshadows, and hope to in the future to try all of the other products they have including: Lipsticks, Highlighters, Lip Liners, Eyeliners, and they now have single eyeshadows also! I will definitely keep you all updated when I make my next purchase or get a chance to try them out!!
In the meantime jump over to www.colourpop.com and grab yourself some!! You wont be disappointed!!!!
Leave me a comment! Have you your tried ‘Colourpop’? what is you favourite shade or product? I you have any questions or just want to have a chat send me an email at: firstname.lastname@example.org or leave me a comment in the comment box below! xxxxxxxx Katie
I honestly don’t think I have ever met a woman that isn’t addicted to anything that sparkles…..its like we have a special section in our brain that says:
‘holy shit that’s pretty!, I need this in my life’….
This is me…to a tea! I’m like one of those awesome birds that collect things that shine, or are of the one colour…..but with glitter! So to my surprise the other day when I came across this new makeup, I had to have it….like….NOW!! Will I wear it? Hell yes I will, If I could do my weekly shopping with a fully ‘glitterfied’ cut crease on my eye with false lashes, and tracksuit pants I would! I would walk down the aisles of the store picking between Dinner Winner and Kan Tong dressed like a bum rocking the best looking glitter eye anyone has ever seen! I would then buy my groceries, and proceed home to look at myself in the mirror, but that’s just me!! PMSL!!!
The product I am talking about is “Eye Kandy”
Little pots of glitter goodness! 3gms to be accurate! I made my discovery in Sydney the other week, a whole display of every colour of the rainbow displayed on a table for all to try….so of course I did. These pots come in soo many colours it is honestly too damn hard to pick just one colour, so I bought a heap!
They ‘activate’ into a liquid glitter by using a liquid called “liquid sugar”, a little see through bottle that looks like water, but I’m telling you….it is anything but…..it’s MAGIC!!
You simply dip a little liquid onto a brush, dip your brush into the glitter and WAH LA, a magic setting glitter! These glitters can be used on eyelids, lips and any other skin surface and is safe for sensitive skin and those that wear contact lenses. The glitters easily wash off with soap and water as well.. Bonus! (If anyone has tried to remove glitter nailpolish before, you know the struggle is real when it comes to glitter!)
I recommend using a little at a time and layering if need be to avoid clumps. When using the darker glitters, it is recommended to use a dark shadow underneath to show the glitters full effect. It takes about 30 seconds to dry, and you are left with a glitter shine that the glitter gods would be proud of, even jealous!
It wears really well! I applied the liquid glitter as a liner for a function I had, I applied at 8am in the morning and by the time I got home at 7pm, my eyes were still glitzy! almost 12hrs….not too shabby.
If your in the market for some eye, lip or face glitter, that is designed for face ( NEVER use craft glitter ) give this a try!
If I could possibly stand up in room surrounded by everyone sitting on chairs in a circle and announce ” My name is Katie, I’m 32 and I am a self confessed beauty addict, and I have an obsession with all things makeup and hair ” and then flick my hair….I would. This is me. Katie. Not one shy away from a brief second in the limelight,( especially if my makeup is on point!! ).
I am a mother of two children who are my WHOLE world! The eldest, which is, my daughter 10yrs, and my little man is 8yrs.! Pigeon Pair, go me!! They are the apple of my eye, and not a day goes by I don’t thank the good JUJU that came my way and sprinkled me with luck dust to get my 2 beautiful kids! And I should probably mention my husband aswell. Yep, I have one, I have had him for 11 years. That’s all! lol.
I have been a qualified Hairdresser for 17 years! ( I started very young ) and have been doing makeup for just as long! It’s my passion! If I get a chance to put my hands on someone and make them look AMAZING I will, permission or not….ya gotta watch me, if you turn your back for a second, i’ll be ready with hairspray and lipstick!! And if I get the chance to make someone feel proud and confident in themselves, by passing them my knowledge and know-how, than my mission in life is complete. I’m sure that’s what I was put on earth for, my mission in life….my purpose!
There is soooooo much I want to share with you guys! this is why I have decided to start up a blog!
